Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme?
ECO4 is a UK government program requiring major energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements such as boiler replacements and insulation, for eligible households. The scheme aims to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty by prioritizing low-income and vulnerable homes.
Can I get help if my home doesn't have a gas connection?
Yes. If your property isn’t connected to the gas grid, you may qualify for alternative heating solutions such as air source heat pumps or, in rural areas, biomass boilers. These options are available under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and parts of ECO4.
Are there grants available for first-time central heating installations?
Yes. Grants are available for installing central heating for the first time if your property has never had it before and you meet the relevant eligibility criteria, such as qualifying benefits, low income, or vulnerability.
How do I check if my property has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)?
You can check your property's EPC rating by visiting the official government EPC register at gov.uk/find-energy-certificate
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides upfront grants to help property owners in England and Wales replace fossil fuel heating with low-carbon alternatives. Grants are currently up to £7,500 for air source or ground source heat pumps and £5,000 for biomass boilers (for rural, off-gas-grid homes). The property must have a valid EPC and meet other eligibility criteria.
Can I choose the type of heating system installed?
Installers will recommend the most suitable system for your property based on technical requirements and scheme rules. You can discuss available options during the assessment, but eligibility and funding may limit your choices.
Is there a warranty on the new heating system?
Yes. Most new heating systems installed under these schemes come with warranties, typically ranging from 2 to 5 years, depending on the manufacturer and installer.
What if I live in a flat or apartment?
Eligibility for grants in flats or apartments can vary. Factors include property ownership, building structure, and technical feasibility for the installation of new heating systems or insulation.
How long does the process take from application to installation?
After your eligibility is confirmed and a survey is completed, installation is usually carried out within a few weeks, depending on installer availability and property requirements.
Is the survey free?
Yes, the survey is always free of charge and you are under no obligation to proceed afterwards.
Will I have to fill in lots of paperwork?
No. The surveyor who carries out your survey will complete the necessary paperwork. The Installer will then process the grant application on your behalf, after the work is completed.
