Boiler grant for pensioners: Am I eligible?

Not every pensioner is automatically eligible. You must meet certain criteria related to your income, benefits, health, and your property’s energy rating.

Main Eligibility Criteria

You may qualify for a free boiler grant if you:

• Receive a means-tested benefit, such as:

  • Pension Credit (Guarantee or Savings Credit)

  • Universal Credit

  • Income Support

  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

  • Housing Benefit or Child Tax Credit

• Live in a home with an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G

• Are a homeowner or a private tenant (with your landlord’s permission)

• Have an old, inefficient boiler (typically 8–15+ years old and non-condensing)

Important Clarifications

• Receiving only the basic State Pension is NOT enough—you must also receive a qualifying benefit or meet local council criteria.

• Age alone does not guarantee eligibility; you must meet the other requirements.

• Boiler grants are not usually available to council or housing association tenants.

LA Flex: Extra Help for Pensioners Not on Benefits

If you don’t claim any of the benefits listed above, you may still qualify under the Local Authority Flexibility (LA Flex) extension of ECO4. This allows local councils to help more vulnerable people, even if they don’t receive benefits.

You may be eligible under LA Flex if you:

• Have a low retirement income (typically £31,000–£36,000, depending on your council)

• Are over 60

• Suffer from health conditions made worse by the cold (e.g., arthritis, respiratory illnesses)

• Face high energy costs compared to your income
